The City of San Jose is now on the hook for $4.1 million for environmental reviews of a new overpass of Zanker Road over Highway 101. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) had rejected the city’s initial bid for a full interchange at Zanker because it lies less than one mile from the Highways 880/101 Interchange.
The money enables the project to complete Caltrans’s Project Approval and Environmental
Document (PA&ED) phase, and qualify it for a variety of grant funding sources.
The overpass will connect Zanker Road to both Fourth Street and Skyport Drive, but the intersections vary in configuration between the two options presented. Mayor Sam Liccardo insisted there should be a way to incorporate interchange-like on-ramps and off-ramps into the overpass at a later date.
Zanker Road to Skyport Drive option, cost: $150 million
Zanker Road to Fourth Street option, cost: $143 million
